CNN-News 18 has awarded Yogi Nathan as the ‘Man of the Year’ 2022 Award for Climate Warrior category by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Yogi Nathan is working as a Bus Conductor in the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Coimbatore. He planted over 3 lakh saplings in the last 37 years using own money. From the childhood onwards he has special respect for the trees. When he was young he used to write poems under the shadow of the trees in the Kotagiri Forests. When becoming elder he used to observe that the trees becoming thin and the shadow of the trees decreasing day by day.
He observed that in the Nigiri forests that forest wealth is decreasing day by day. He taught the lessons for the public residing in the nearby forests that if they fell trees for their use the forest wealth would be destroyed. He fought against the timber mafia in the Nilgiris, pasting handwritten posters in public walls, identifying areas where trees had been felled with their survey numbers and urging the police and forest officials to take action against the offenders.
He distributed saplings for free to passengers travelling in his bus. He has also visited countless schools, colleges and industries to raise awareness about protecting the environment.
He was awarded the “Eco Warrior” award by Vice-President Mohammed Hamid Ansari in 2008 and the Earth Matters Foundation award from Mike Pandey in the same year. The Tamil Nadu government has also conferred on him the title ‘Suttru Suzhal Seyal Veerar’ (Eco Warrior).
